May 20th I traveled to Columbia, Maryland to help Skye Media Group celebrate their 7th anniversary. They chose to celebrate it with other fellow creatives by hosting the Skye Soiree’. The event featured good food and libations, speed networking, a creative video and dope music. It’s something very unique about an event where you can pitch your business and milly rock at the same time.
In the past I’ve spoken about networking, and how it’s a necessary evil. Whether you’re an entrepreneur, or a working professional it’s always important to grow your client base . Some people are natural born extroverts. They say “hello how are you,” and it sounds like they’re giving an award winning speech. For the rest of us networking can be awkward and sometimes even a little scary. That is why I think events like this are so important. The environment was very upscale, positive, fun and laid back. It started with speed networking.
Have you ever went speed dating? Well imagine that vibe but with creative professionals, and without will he/she like me thoughts. Guests had a set amount of time to chat before rotating tables. In order to keep the conversation going questions like “what is your greatest business struggle/achievement” and ‘who would play your life in a movie” were asked. It provided for a fun atmosphere where everyone felt comfortable. Businesses varied from beauty, health and fitness, finance, mental health and more.
The next part of the event was the presentation of SMG’s video. It was introduced by media personality Ladawn Black. The video was a raw and authentic short film about Toni Patterson, the creator of Skye Media Group (SMG). It gave a very real interpretation into the pros and cons of running SMG. She discussed creative control, importance of branding and believing in your passions and talents. The video is available here.
I truly enjoy being at events where I feel inspired. I can honestly say that. I connected with a few familiar faces, and met new ones as well. The food was delicious and the decor was beautiful. The lighting and uplostry catered to the glamorous professional vibe of the event. Faces were beat and men were suited up. However, it didn’t seem fake. It was truly a moment to just celebrate and connect. Check out my video below that features a one on one with Toni and a few photos from the event.
