October 22, 2016 I attended The Bison Homecoming Edition of Culture Creators,  powered by African Pride. The event was created to celebrate  the leaders and innovators in black culture. Special guests included: Gabrielle Dennis (Rosewood, The Game, etc.) A.J. (106 and Park, etc.), Lance Gross (House of Payne, Temptation, etc.), Laz Alonso (Avatar, Jumping the Broom, Stomp the Yard, etc.),  Justine Skye and many more. Ticket proceeds went to the Culture Creators Scholarship fund at Howard University.

I really like the title of the event, Culture Creators. I believe in order to spread light and love in the world you should generate it yourself. Entertainment and media is one of the biggest ways to impact the culture and younger generation. It was so nice to hear from so many influential people about their beliefs and views in the way they make their mark. The handsome Laz Alonso spoke about the power of living your passions. He is a Howard University grad and informed us that he actually started in wall street, and wasn’t fulfilled. He spoke about the importance of not only living your passions, but finding ways to monetize it.

Rosewood’s Gabrielle Dennis discussed her passion for youth and education, specifically HBCU’s.

The actress explained how important it is for black women to remain persistent and true to themselves while going after goals and dreams. She spoke candidly about creating work she’s proud of and being a positive representation for others who look up to her. In addition to the tastemakers, there were many other HBCU grads present who were honored for their various contributions to entertainment.

How are you impacting your culture? Is it through your non-profit, employment, art or blog? What drives you? It is my hope that events like this motivate readers to impact communities, tell stories, and create the culture!
